Uber Insurance Edmonton

Are you an Uber driver?

You are now eligible for a provincially-approved insurance package — and you’ll need it, too!

It’s official: Edmonton is the first city in Canada to pass an Uber-friendly bylaw, which makes it 100% legal for the company to operate in Edmonton.

Edmonton councilors voted to permit Uber to obtain a license to operate in the city, as long as all drivers have having provincially-approved insurance.

Any Uber driver caught without proper insurance could face a fine of up to $5,000. The city is working on hiring bylaw officers to ensure enforcement.

According to the new bylaw, Uber cannot operate without proper insurance for its drivers.

“The leadership this city has shown to put forth Canada’s first progressive ride-sharing regulations is a great thing,” said Ramit Kar, the Uber general manager for Alberta. “We have made some concessions in the bylaw but this is a workable framework… I’m optimistic on the insurance front and quite frankly, we’re going to be doing everything we can to be in compliance by March 1.”
